Norway (June 14 - 20, 2018 : Baby J was 7 months old)

Norway in 100 Words

Jackson’s second country outside of the USA. Main goal was to drive to Njordfjord where Lindsey’s ancestors are from – Long Trip with Dramatic Landscapes – waterfalls, fjords, and mountains everywhere!  Good news is that Baby J sleeps HARD in cars so he would go silent for hours at a time. Super friendly people, amazing cell service everywhere including in tunnels. New rule of no one night stays made after this trip with time lost packing unpacking.

Norway is BEAUTIFUL

It is impossible to really convey how gorgeous Norway is – Sean was constantly pulling over the car to take photos. This photo is one of our absolute favorites – if you look close you can see the tiny roads way off in the distance.

The rest of the story

We've never seen experienced driving like this

Waterfalls dozens of stories high (seriously, watch the video), cows in the road, tunnels that are 30 miles long, and overall just picture worthy moments around every corner!

Roads end and a very affordable ferry with dining service would cart you across a fjord. Definitely one of Sean’s favorite driving levels even though 5 hour drives each day were a bit much for Lindsey.

Lindsey's Family in Norway

Our nephew Rand is named after the Rand Farm – a place Lindsey and her extended family had randomly found 5 years prior to this trip because a helpful Norweigan happened to know someone on the family tree they had….yada yada yada, they were able to find the Rand Farm and meet their relatives who broke down when told they were family from the US.  On our trip, we went back by to show off the new baby!

Broken Breast Pump

This story starts with an accident and develops into how incredibly kind people can be when you are in need of help!

What we learned in Norway

Cell Service is Phenomanal

Lindsey worked the entire time we drove

You wouldn’t expect to have good enough cell service to stream video from your laptop while driving through Fjords but Norway’s service is so good that you even get 4G inside the 25 mile long tunnels!

1 Day Stays are Brutal

After this trip, we made a new traveling rule

We made the decision that the time and effort to unpack all of the baby gear each night, cook dinner, clean and pack up in the morning to get back on the road was no longer worth it – now we stay in each location for at least 2 nights so things are less hectic.

Alcohol is Expensive

Expect to pay $10 per beer – even from a service station

We expected the expensive beer prices so we brought a few bottles of wine from Denmark – that filled our night cap urges.  We did go to one bar in Flamm but it only cost $10 for a large beer which isn’t too much worse than Austin, TX where we are from.

Bus Stops Everywhere

You can be 100 miles from the nearest town but you’ll still see bus stops every few miles.  It became a running joke on our massive road trip.

Tunnels are Super Long

Like 25 Miles Long

It was pretty mind blowing to go into a tunnel and come out 30+ minutes later but that isn’t rare in Norway.  There are also round abouts in the tunnels + 4G Cell Service!

Babies are Everywhere

….a Scandanavian Tradition

Just like every other Scandanavian Country – babies are everywhere and are cherished.  You’ll be able to find any diapers, wipes, high quality baby food at any store you go to!
