Denmark (June 1 - 14, 2018 : Baby J was 7 months old)

Denmark in 100 Words

Jackson’s first country outside of the USA. Other Babies Everywhere. Copenhagen for a week. Stayed in a studio located in a tower – amazing views, no elevator. Impossible language to learn but everyone speaks perfect English. Canals and bikes everywhere. Friendly people, great food, drinking on the street is allowed and common because bars are so expensive. Road trip to Aarhus – Saw a Roger Waters/Pink Floyd Concert! Amazing museums and deer you can feed. Skagen, the tip of Denmark – stood at the point where Baltic and North Seas meet. Epic sunset and sand dunes plus a surprise beach fox.

Top Denmark Experiences

Copenhagen

Our Denmark trip started in the capital city, Copenhagen.  From the first day, we fell in love with this city and its many charms – cool friendly locals, great restaurants everywhere, picturesqe canals, and the very baby friendly culture.

Roger Waters

Sean has been a huge Pink Floyd Fan since his time at Texas Tech so when we found out that Roger Waters (Founding member of Pink Floyd and writer of all songs on “The Wall” “Dark Side of The Moon” “Animals” etc.) had a concert a 2 hour drive from Copenhagen, there was no chance we were going to miss it – plus as Sean said “I’ll always be able to tell Jackson that we took him to a Pink Floyd Show when he was 7 months old…..and that is why he has to mow the lawn etc.”

Denmark Musuems & Deer Park

Some musuems we found from research (Ex. “Den Gamble By” featured in Rick Steve’s & Lonely Planet), others were complete luck like the underground art exhibit Sean and Baby J found in Copenhagen.

Overall, these little detours gave us a greater appreciation of Denmark and provided some great moments.

Skagen (Tip of Denmark)

Truly one of the most beautiful places we’ve ever been and one of the most unexpected unbelievable days during our trips.  We decided to go a day early to beat a rainy forecast and it was an incredible decision because we were treated to perfect weather and a sunset so incredible it was out of a movie….if you are ever in Denmark, don’t skip Skagen!

What we learned in Denmark

Bikes are Everywhere

Denmark is very flat so the bike is the #1 Transportation

They even have 3 wheeled bikes (2 upfront, 1 in Back) to carry groceries, kids etc. up front – pretty brilliant!

There is even a special traffic light that lets cyclists get a 5 second head start before cars get to go.

Smørrebrød

Denmark’s Favorite Food = Open Faced Sandwiches eaten with a knife and fork

Each sandwich is like a work of art with presentation as a key aspect – you can’t hide a poorly constructed sandwich under that top piece of bread.

One of the favorites has a ton of tiny shirmp on it – pretty delicious!

7-Eleven

Actually has amazing food!

On our first night in Copenhagen we stopped for diapers at 7 Eleven and saw how good the food looked so we decided to buy our dinner there – the food was delicious and we were able to eat it under a giant statue by the water where we met some other travelers – it was an amazing experience!

New Parents in Denmark

Split a Full Year of Paid Paternity Leave

We met a new Father with a kiddo born within a few days of Jackson – he and his wife had 15 months of Paid Time Off to split and his company required him to take 3 months off!  They could choose how to split the time but they had to take at least 12 months off by law – this is to ensure a healthy parent child bond.

Hygge = Coziness

Life should be enjoyed

This Danish Motto means they enjoy that peice of dessert, they enjoy that lazy night by the fire, drink that glass of wine….it is all part of what makes Denmark the “happiest” Nation on the planet.

Babies are Everywhere

…And Sometimes they are left outside by themselves

Walk by any restaurant and you will see baby strollers next to tables which made us feel very welcome to enjoy eating out while we had our kiddo with us.

The suprising behavior to see was that at coffee shops, Parents would leave their babies sleeping in the strollers outside while they went in and ordered.
